The former world number one, down to 17th in the rankings and about to fall even further, has decided not to take the gamble he did at Sawgrass in May.
Injured at Augusta, he chose to try out his knee and Achilles in the Players Championship on May 12, but limped to the turn in 42 shots – only one off the worst nine-hole score of his career – and withdrew.
That is the last seen of him on a golf course. Indeed he revealed last week that he had not swung a club since, so his withdrawal yesterday came as no surprise.
Eight years ago at Royal St George’s he lost a ball with his opening drive and started with a triple-bogey seven. Open fans are not going to have the chance to see if he can improve on that.

He was the biggest thing in golf back then – by some distance – and he remains the biggest name. Not just for golfing reasons, of course, after all the stories about his serial infidelity that emerged following a bizarre car crash outside his home in the early hours in November 2009.
But the sport no longer needs him as much as it did. McIlroy is the new kid on the block – and what a kid judging by the way he came back from his 80 at the Masters with a performance at Congressional that reminded so many people of Woods at his most dominant.
Hopefully there will be duels to come between the young Northern Irishman and the 35-year-old American.
There is still hope that Woods can not only become fit again, but become a force again – maybe never to the extent he was, but possibly to challenge Jack Nicklaus’ 18-major record.

American Kris Blanks birdied his final five holes to fire an eight-under par 63 and seize a one-stroke lead after Thursday’s opening round of the $4.5 million US PGA John Deere Classic.
Blanks, whose best PGA showing was a share of second at last year’s Puerto Rico Open, seized a one-stroke edge over countrymen Davis Love and Steve Marino and Canada’s Matt McQuillan with US players Mark Wilson and Kyle Stanley on 65. Blanks, who began on the back nine, opened with a birdie only to bogey the 11th. He answered with three birdies in a row starting at the 12th, then began his back nine with a birdie at the first.
After a bogey at the par-4 fourth, Blanks responded with birdies on his final five holes to seize the lead, including a 25-foot birdie putt at the par-4 fifth and an 11-footer at the ninth to take the lead alone.
“It was good to finally see some putts fall,” Blanks said. “I’ve been struggling with (putting) all year, so that was definitely a positive. It’s just fun to make some putts. I thought my speed was real good all day.”
US veteran Steve Stricker, trying to win the John Deere for the third year in a row, was in a group of 12 players on 66 that included Australian Cameron Percy and Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge.
McQuillan, a rookie who has missed 10 cuts in a row, won his way onto this season’s US PGA Tour in last year’s qualifying tournament after giving up his career in 2005 for two years of bartending.
“After about a year working, I realized golf wasn’t too bad,” McQuillan said. “It’s very difficult and to stay positive and patient has been the key for me,” McQuillan said. “I’m out here playing with the best players in the world.
“So it’s very tough to stay positive and patient. But I just figure I’m out here, I qualified to get out here, so I’m trying to have fun and make some birdies.”
After opening with an eagle sandwiched between bogeys, McQuillan made seven birdies to finish the day, three of them in a row starting at the par-3 12th.
“I figured I got my great stuff and bad stuff out early and then just tried to make some good swings,” he said.

The wheel turns quickly in the world of sport but it has spun off its axle this week at Royal St George’s where professional golf – the fans, the players, the media “experts” – has rushed to embrace the new US Open champion, Rory McIlroy. Tiger who? Try Tiger Woods.

The Northern Irishman will step on to the 1st tee of the 2011 Open Championship at 9.09am on Thursday and, contrary to the expectations of his new legion of fans, some of whom might not be entirely aware of just how hard it is to win a major championship, he will not be wearing a Superman cape. Like the other 155 players in the field he will come only with his caddie, his clubs and his talents.
That was enough to lap the field at Congressional Country club last month but Royal St George’s, a classic – some may say hardcore – links, presents an altogether different challenge, one that may not entirely suit McIlroy’s brand of golf.
McIlroy sees and hears and reads everything, by all accounts, and he is aware of doubts. More crucially for his hopes, he seems aware of his own deficiencies.
“I have prepared really well in the last two weeks working on shots I need out here,” he said. “Physically I feel a lot stronger but mentally I am a lot better than I was last year. It was a good lesson to learn and hopefully I will do better if I come up against that weather again this year.”
The 22-year-old was speaking after one final trip around the Royal St George’s links, this time in the company of his old friend and mentor Darren Clarke, along with the defending champion, Louis Oosthuizen, and the Masters winner, Charl Schwartzel. Afterwards, he showed off his prize – a crisp £20 note, which should accelerate his spiral towards an eight-figure fortune – and laid out his hopes and dreams for the next four days. “It’s my home Open and the one I want to win more than any other. I got my first major a few weeks ago and it would be nice to get my second this week. If not, I’ll just have to wait.”
McIlroy’s appeal lies in his talent, but there is also his personality. Unlike the former world No1, there is none of the pointless obfuscation on these occasions. He says what he thinks and feels. There is enormous credit in that, but there is also the risk of showing weakness. “If not, I’ll just have to wait”? In his prime Woods waited for no one. He wanted it there and then, the hell with what anyone else wanted.
That was the old Tiger Woods. The “new Tiger Woods” (a label the McIlroy camp is anxious to disown, incidentally) is more relaxed about these things, believing that the tournament is won out on the links and not in the pre-match skirmishes. There is great maturity in such thinking but there is perhaps just a smidgen of naivety. At an Open Championship every little thing counts – a bounce here, a bounce there; a word out of place here, a word out of place here.

While that might yet prove to be the case, he was outshone yesterday by Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke, two of McIlroy’s compatriots and friends.
Both posted opening rounds of 68 at Royal St George’s yesterday to feature in the top ten at the end of the day.
Although he is a major winner, McDowell’s finish caused most surprise since it had initially looked as though he was trying his best to rule himself out of contention on the first day. He opened with a double bogey and incurred two more bogeys later, although five birdies offset the damage.
“I just got off to a horrible start,” the 2010 US Open champions said afterwards. “Three days’ perfect preparation, nice warm-up this morning and then I walk onto the first tee and just put one of the worst swings of the week on it.”
The hole didn’t get any better for him and he ended up taking six strokes. “I walked to the second tee wondering what the hell just happened,” he said. “But I managed to hang in there and made a great putt on the second, which really settled me down. After that it was about hanging tough.”
McDowell hit 12 greens and took 26 putts and managed to repair the damage – and more – with four birdies in his final nine holes. “The old cliche is that you can’t win it today, you can only lose it,” he said. “And I tried to lose it.”
He added: “It’s great to have the three Northern Irish boys in contention with 54 holes to go. The way we were going after the first three or four holes there might have been a few medicinal cold beers needed.”
Clarke was another popular success story yesterday. Like McDowell, he did not get off to the best of starts. In fact, all three Northern Irishmen stumbled at the first hole, with Clarke following McIlroy in making a bogey at ‘The Kitchen’. But Clarke steadied himself and collected three birdies in the back nine.
Playing in the best of the conditions, the 42-year-old Clarke was back to his consistent best. “Most of the time I was in control,” he said later. “It’s a real tough, stern test. You’ve got to stay patient this week, which has not always been one of my strong points. But that’s what the Open and links golf is all about.”
Patience, a characteristic Clarke acknowledges isn’t his forte, was his watchword. His catch-up with renowned sports psychologist Bob Rotella on Wednesday did him good. “He knows me inside out and we’ve known each other a very long time,” said Clarke. “I was lucky.”

Bright sunshine and a light breeze invited low scores on the Royal St George’s layout, yet the benign conditions did not prevent several heavyweights including world No.1 Luke Donald from missing the cut.
Clarke’s round was a roller-coaster with an eagle and five birdies offset by a double-bogey and three bogeys but the 42-year-old Ulsterman was bullish about his prospects heading into the weekend, where poor weather has been forecast.
“There’s an awful long way to go yet, and I believe the forecast for the weekend is very, very poor, which I quite look forward to,” Clarke said.
A win for Clarke would be hugely popular for a player who had three top 10 finishes in the Open in a five-year spell from 1997, including a tie for second place at Troon in 1997 and a tie for third place at Royal Lytham in 2001.
Martin Kaymer is joined by first round leader Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, cigar-chomping Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez and America’s Chad Campbell.
Bjorn, who had lit up the first round with a five-under-par 65, found the going tougher on Friday but did enough to stay in touch with a two-over-par 72.
“It wasn’t the prettiest of days golf-wise, but I’ll take where I stand in the championship right now,” Bjorn said.
Seven players – including US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel – were two shots off the lead at two under while five players, including world No.6 Phil Mickelson, were grouped at one under.
Tournament favourite Rory McIlroy meanwhile remains in contention, bunched with 12 players in the clubhouse at level par, four off the lead.
The 22-year-old US Open champion, who had started the day one over, posted a one-under-par 69 after a round which included four birdies and three bogeys.
“It would have been nicer to be a couple better, but I’ll take that going into the weekend,” McIlroy said. “I’m very happy with my position and within striking distance of the leaders.”
English amateur Tom Lewis, who had led overnight after a record-breaking five-under-par round in the first round, meanwhile slipped down the board after a four-over-par 74 which left him at one under.
But with the cut coming at three-over, Lewis, 20, had done enough to guarantee his involvement over the weekend on a day when several high-profile British hopes fell by the wayside.
Donald, world No.2 Lee Westwood and European Ryder Cup stars Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter all missed the cut.

That’s what was said of Rory McIlroy before he won the U.S. Open last month by eight shots with a record score. Some players — with an Irish accent, it should be noted — began the countdown to Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors. Then came the British Open, and a curious complaint from McIlroy that he doesn’t like playing in the wind.
“That will be hard on him,” Clarke said. “But if I was a gambling man … I would have a substantial bet on Lee Westwood winning the PGA in Atlanta. I hope he does.”

“But I got into gear n the back nine. Being at the Open last week was a real inspiration. “Darren Clarke played great and the player who really inspired me was Tom Watson. He’s not as long as the younger guys, but he still hits such wonderful shots.”
Ahn, who was the 2009 Korean LPGA Rookie of the Year, made her five under par round in less rocky style. She packed seven birdies into halves of 34 and 33.
Japan’s Miyazato had a top ten finish at this month’s US Women’s Open and she continued her fine form with six birdies in a 68. The 26-year-old was hit hard by the Japanese earthquake disaster that hit her home city of Sendai in March. “Everyone I knew was OK but it did make it difficult to focus on golf,” said the Californian-based former world No.1 who has helped raise around $130,000 for the Earthquake Disaster Fund.
“But I’m now feeling better and today I stayed patient and controlled my golf.”

Miyazato raised both arms in the air after she sank her winning putt, and several players ran on to the green to soak her with water.
Miyazato joins two-time winners Laura Davies of England and Annika Sorenstam of Sweden, and needs one more Evian win to tie Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson, the inaugural tournament champion and record-holder with three.
“I want to win it as many times as possible,” Miyazato said. “I am looking forward to getting more opportunities.”

Time and time again he has proven his doubters wrong. I suspect that though he will need some time to bounce back, that he will prove them wrong again. Tiger Woods will again be the best player in the world playing the game of golf.
