Golf Training – Should You Get a Golf Professional to Teach You How to Play?

In golf, there are two categories of players – the golf pros and the golf amateurs. Fortunately for all, the line between these two categories does meet at some point.
There are many people who are of the opinion that golf is a leisurely game. Its purpose is for recreation, thus hiring a golf professional to teach you how to play defeats the purpose of the game and drains it of any real enjoyment.
However, although there are close to 30 million golfers in the States alone most of them have never had or will never get to break a score of 100. Many of these golfers complain not only of a less than satisfactory game, but also of the aches and pains that they feel after a game of golf.
Being able to play golf like a pro through one’s own practice may work out for some golfers, even if it is not as effective as having the assistance of someone more professional to help you with the game. Furthermore, being able to play golf well and being able to enjoy playing golf can maximize on the satisfaction and pleasure that the game promises.
Deciding on whether or not assistance from a pro is needed is as important as choosing the right golf equipment. You would need to first identify and prioritize your goals, decide on the level of commitment that you are prepared to give, as well as the amount of money that you can afford to invest in the game. The following are some pointers that you would find helpful with regards to enlisting the help of a pro.
- Having a coach or a pro to assist you could help in zeroing in onto your specific weaknesses. Once your weaknesses have been identified, your coach could give several targeted exercises to help you to correct your weaknesses. With a coach by your side, this will be monitored to see if you’re doing things right.
- A golf coach could also help with getting rid of bad golfing habits which normally result in injuries like the golfer’s elbow which can be very painful. Your coach will also be able to guide you through a proper warm-up routine. This is one of the greatest advantages of having the help of a professional, as it helps you not just with the way you play but also by avoiding injuries and unnecessary aches and pains.
- Discuss with your prospective coach and get their opinion on teaching and playing the game. A good coach or golf pro will readily tell you that the best way is to build up on the basics of playing golf and to avoid the short cuts and latest fads. If someone tells you the latter will get faster results, keep in mind that although this is true, as soon as you stop working with them your golf performance will drop back to where you were before. Thus, it is best to stick with the tried and tested basic rules of playing golf, which could take longer to master but will guarantee a better performance.
- The average rate for a personal lesson with a golf pro could be about $75 per an hour’s lesson. However, remember that prices may vary with the different pros that you will be working with, or with the different golf school or club.
- Should the rates for a personal one-on-one lesson be too high or expensive, you may choose to go for a lesson with a group of other golfers. This way expenses can be shared. Please remember though, not to have more than 4 people to a golf pro. This lets you have attention as good as a personal one-on-one lesson but with less expenses. A golf pro coaching for an hour for a group of 4 golfers would cost somewhere around $120.
- A vital thing to keep in mind is that when working with a pro, it means going for quality rather than quantity. This is after all why you hired them in the first place. Since there is a limited number of lessons, work hard to ensure that you achieve your goal of being an excellent golfer at a few techniques, rather than knowing many techniques but being the master of none.
- A professional coach will instruct you on the techniques to a better game on your own in the future without his supervision. The main purpose is of course so that you can become a better golfer on your own. This includes not only playing with the right techniques but also having a good warm-up and stretching routine.
And finally, even after you have completed all your lessons and after some improvements in your game, you should still go back to see your coach maybe once a year. This will enable him to check up on your golf game and to see if there are any other techniques or aspects that you still need to work on. There will always be room for improvement, more so if you want to play a better game of golf.

Confidence is Tiger problem

Tiger Woods has lost confidence in his swing and will not be able to dominate the game of golf again until he gets it back.

That's the view of Padraig Harrington who played the first two rounds of last week's 92nd PGA Championship with the beleaguered 14-time major winner.

Harrington, himself a three-time major winner currently fighting to regain his own lost confidence and to extract himself from a rut that has seen him go without a victory in the three years that have elapsed since his second Open Championship triumph in 2008, says of Woods in a report published on Tuesday by The Irish Golf Desk: "He (Tiger) is still obviously a little bit in a transition with his left knee.

"Certainly early on, he wasn't that confident with it. I saw a player who hit plenty of good golf shots. He certainly didn't get any breaks whatsoever and got a lot of bad breaks.

"That usually happens to a player who is a little bit low on confidence.

"There is no doubt that he looks a little bit low on his game at the moment. If he were anybody else, his Cleveland CG16 Black Pearl 3-PW Iron Set with Steel Shaftswould probably win tournaments and he would be so happy with it.

"But he obviously doesn't love his own golf game at the moment and you have to have confidence in what you are doing."

So far this year, Woods, the long-time owner of the World No 1 spot, has crashed from second to 33rd in the world Rankings and not having qualified for the FedEx Cup series which starts with The Barclays next week, looks set to fall out of the world's top 50 if he does not find some alternative tournaments to play in before the end of the year.

Harrington, who was at pains to say he was not without problems of his own at the moment, aadded that with a wave of exciting new golfing pretenders rolling onto the golfing stage and clamouring to ascend to the throne Woods once occupied with such authority , it was going to get tougher and tougher for him to dominate the Cleveland CG16 Black Pearl 3-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts in the way he used to.

"I think if he goes out there and wins again he could be right back, but I don't think we will ever see him dominate like he used to purely because a lot of players have got better in the meantime.

"It is hard to see him doing that, but I can definitely see him winning tournaments and winning majors again."

Harrington has said more than once that he has enough problems of his own and shouldn't be worrying about Woods.

After finishing tied for 64th in Atlanta alongside the likes of his injury-hit Northern Irish neighbour, Rory McIlroy, Harrington has slipped another five places to 74th in the world this week and must now go out later this week at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro and battle to qualify for the FedEx Cup play-offs.(Cleveland CG16 Black Pearl 3-PW Iron Set with Steel Shafts)

In the meantime, he is looking forward to making changes in his own swing with guru Pete Cowen following his break from Sam Torrance..

Encouraged by the some of the ideas Cowen has already come up with re his swing, Harrington said: "I couldn't get into it with the PGA Championship around the corner. It wasn't the time to be changing things.

"When you get to a big tournament you have got to work with what you've got.

"I am looking forward to having a little tinker with Pete Cowen and hearing what he has to say and seeing what road that takes me down."

SA duo gearing up for World Cup

Friends and golfing partners since they were teenagers, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen have long dreamed of the opportunity to represent their country in the World Cup together. Now they'll finally get that chance at the 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup atHainanIslandinChina, taking place from November 24 - 27.

"We are really excited about it," Schwartzel, the current Masters Champion.

As the highest ranked South African golfer, it was his right to pick the partner of his choice, and it didn't take him too long to decide on Oosthuizen.

"We've both come a long way and are good friends, having played a lot of junior, amateur and now professional golf together," he said. "It is no exaggeration to say that it is a dream come true for both of us to play together and represent South Africain the World Cup.( Ping G15 Driver)

"We won the World Junior Team Championship inJapanin 2000 so it would be quite something if we can pull off the 'double' as professionals."

Schwartzel also credited Oosthuizen's Open victory at St. Andrews last year as providing the impetus for his win atAugustaback in April.

"I can't wait to get toChina," added Oosthuizen. "I remember when we were boys growing up and playing golf together, we always talked about playing for South Africa in the World Cup and, if possible, playing our first one together.

"So it was great that Charl was in a position to choose his partner and he picked me. I am honoured to play with him. He is such a good friend and I think the two of us will make a great team. We played a lot of amateur golf together and have won together in both Indiaand Japanfor South Africaso I think we will have a good week." (Ping G15 Driver)

The duo will chase a sixth South African victory at the prestigious event, following the likes of Gary Player and Harold Henning in 1965, Dale Hayes and Bobby Cole in 1974, Ernie Els and Wayne Westner in 1996, Ernie again and Retief Goosen in 2001 and Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabbatini in 2003.

"Being able to enjoy the honour of representing your country is awesome. You've got to be comfortable with each other. If that is the case, and you hit a bad shot, your partner knows you didn't do it on purpose and you just move on," continued Schwartzel.

"Professional golf is quite a selfish game so it is nice to get the chance occasionally to play Ping G15 Driver as a team and being as good friends as we are, I think Louis and I will definitely be able to inspire one another and urge each other along.

"Because I was higher in the World Ranking it was always going to be my choice but I teased him for a little while that I was having to think about it and might pick someone else!"

As for their peers, Oosthuizen reckons they are fully behind them.

"We are certainly getting that feeling on the range," he said. "Obviously Ernie and Retief won in 2001 and then Trevor and Rory in 2003, so we have had success in the past. However, it would be really great to getSouth Africa's name back on the trophy again and we'll be trying our hardest to do just that."

British duo in front at Czech Open

A hard-charging O'Hara shot a superb seven-under-par 65 to rocket up up the leaderboard and finish on 10 under 206 alongside Fisher, who reached that total with a well-played 68.

The duo have a two-shot lead over second-round leader Mikael Lundberg, taking advantage of a rare European Tour opportunity after losing his card last year and spending most of his time on the Challenge Tour, who shot an even-par 72.

Lundberg is joined by Englishman Gary Boyd, who carded a two-under 70 , and India's Gaganjeet Bhullar, whose eight-under-par 64 was the low round of the day.

Irishman Damien McGrane (72), Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara (73) andEngland's David Drysdale lie a further two shots back on six under, four off the lead.

Co-leader Fisher has found some much needed form this week, after missing 20 out of his first 21 cuts this season.

The highlight of his round came at the par-four 11th, where he holed his approach shot for an unlikely eagle. He added four birdies and two bogeys to that around the course.

"I'm really enjoying my TaylorMade R11 Irons at the moment, and I've got a great caddie on the bag," Fisher told europeantour.com.

"I had a lot of fun out there - it's where you want to be, not struggling to make the cut. It's been a while since I've led a tournament, but I'm holding it together pretty well at the moment.

"I'm looking forward to it tomorrow. I've always held my own whenever I've been in contention in the past. Obviously I haven't won before, but I've given myself a good chance tomorrow, and that's all I can ask for. MyTaylorMade R11 Irons's good enough, and I just want to have fun.

"There are times this season when I haven't enjoyed being out there, so I'm going to make the most of it now. I've just got to stay in the present. What will be, will be."

O'Hara, too, hasn't exactly been setting the golf world alight in recent times, and in fact missed five consecutive cuts before entering this event.

He produced a bogey-free round that features seven birdies, including four in his opening seven holes.

"I started playing TaylorMade R11 Irons really well, then went through a funny patch where I wasn't striking the ball well," he said. "But I've been striking it very well for the past two or three months, just haven't been making any putts.

"I've been making my fair share this week, and my scores have reflected that. My driving and greens in regulation stats have been pretty good, so if I could just become even an average putter, I probably wouldn't be struggling like I have done. I've been guilty of changing my putter every other week in the past, but I've found one I like and I'm in a good groove on the greens now, so I think I'm just going to stick with it."

Bhullar, meanwhile, also achieved a eagle on a par-four, his coming courtesy of an 80-yard wedge shot at the 13th.

He was full praise for the conditions.

"I've played The Open at Turnberry in 2009 and the Omega European Masters for the past two years, and the weather hasn't been great. But this week it's been perfect, and it feels like heaven on earth. I'm loving TaylorMade R11 Irons," he said.

Gary Boyd, only two shots off the lead, was pleased to still be in contention after pulling things back on the back nine following a disappointing first nine holes.

"I was probably on my way out of the tournament after shooting two over on the front nine, especially with the guys behind me making birdies," he said. "But I holed a nice putt on the tenth, and that kind of kick-started my recovery.

"I had a good finish again today with birdies at three of the last five holes, and I also lipped out on 17. The three-putt on 16 didn't help, but it was nice to roll one in on the last."

New goals for Fisher after Czech win

Oliver Fisher, a first-time European Tour winner at the Czech Open on Sunday, has reset his sights on a top 60 place in The Race toDubai.

Fisher, who wasGreat BritainandIreland's youngest-ever Walker Cup representative in 2005 before he turned professional, won the Czech Open after his 174th Tour start and has lifted his place on the Race To Dubai standings from 224th to 75th.

He has also lifted his Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons and daring do after a long struggle to rediscover the form that took him to 51st place on the Order of Merit list in 2008 and believes he can now realistically set a new goal of making it into the Race To Dubai final.

Before winning the Czeck Open he seemed to be going nowehere but backwards and was feeling "pretty frustrated" after making just one cut in 21 tournaments between December 2010 and July of this year.

But the 22-year-old had never stopped working at his Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons and began to turn things arounf when he made the cut at the Nordea Masters and the Irish Open last month.

Then came his maiden professional win at the Prosper Golf Resort's Old Course in Celadn?in the Czech Republic last Sunday and upping his ante like this has got him excited again and thinking bigger

"I hadn't really given the Dubai World Championship a second thought until now, because my form so far this season hadn't been the best, to say the very least.

"But now that I've got my first win under my belt, which was my target at the start of the year, I've got to set myself new goals," Fisher told the ieuropeantour.com

"I've got a realistic chance of finishing in the top 60 of The Race to Dubainow, so that's definitely on my radar. It's a massive event, so I'd love to play Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons in it for the first time."

As a result of prominent performances in theCzech Republic, two new names have appeared among the Race To Dubai's top 60 -Italy's Lorenzo Gagli and Scot Richie Ramsey.

Gagli climbed up nine places at the weekend to the 52nd rung after tying for fifth in the Czech Open, while Ramsey's 12th-place tie hoisted the Scot three places to No 60.

Happy memories for Molinari

The way he emerged victorious was special in itself, birdying his last three holes by TaylorMade R11 Ironsat Gleneagles to pip Australian Brett Rumford to the post right at the death, but perhaps even more significantly it was the win that all but forced Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie to make the Italian one of his wildcard picks for the European squad that took on the USA at Celtic Manor.

It was very much on Molinari's mind as well. Before the start of the final round, trailing by one shot, he was quoted as saying, "I think if you win the last event and you don't get picked there's something seriously wrong. I would be very upset if I win and he doesn't pick me."

Edoardo did win, and Montgomerie did pick him, choosing the 30-year-old Italian over even the likes of Paul Casey and Justin Rose.

It all worked out for the European team in the end, as they won a nail-biter at Celtic Manor, and even though neither of the Molinaris won TaylorMade R11 Irons, their partnership grabbed a half point in the fourballs and Edoardo himself managed a half point on the final day singles against Rickie Fowler - points that were as valuable as any others scored.

Edoardo was riding pretty high at that stage, climbing as high as 15th in the rankings. A more sedate 2011 has since seen him drop back down to 50th and he'll be eager to start his comeback this week.

"Defending my title at Gleneagles is a big priority - it's a great tournament and I really like the course, which will be a great venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup," he said.

"I like playing TaylorMade R11 Irons inScotland and I'm sure the Scottish crowds will be unbelievable to me again, just like they were last year. They are the most knowledgeable crowd that we play in front of."

His brother Francesco led the event going into the final round last year, but finished third after a disappointing 75. He's back again as well to try and rectify that wrong.

"So far Edoardo has had all the success inScotland, and I'm keen to follow his example this year," Francesco said.

"We've won a number of tournaments between us, but have yet to win the same title, so that's what I'll be aiming for this week."

, so I think I'm still on the right side of it."
