Surrounded by former NHL stars, preparing to tee it up in Tuesday’s Pro Am for the Canadian Tour Championship at Ambassador Golf Club, Adam Hadwin confessed something that could come as a shock to the red-and-white, maple-leaf clad nation that’s already anointed him as the country’s newest golf darling.
“This might hurt the Canadian public, but I’m not a huge hockey guy,” Hadwin said. At five-foot-nine and 157 pounds, maybe that shouldn’t come as a big surprise. It’s certainly not a surprise on the level by which Hadwin, the 23-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C., has taken Canada’s golfing world by storm. In three trips to the PGA Tour, Hadwin has banked $302,440.
“It’s an absolute honour,” Hadwin said of the attention. “People don’t want to interview you unless you’re doing something right.”
Hadwin knows that for all he’s accomplished, many kilometres remain to be travelled along the road to the top. While he’s earned $354,366.19 this year, the 2010 Canadian Tour rookie of the year has recorded just one win this season, in the Canadian Tour’s Colombia Tour Championship last March.
He’s eighth overall on the Canadian Tour’s Order of Merit, the fourth-rated Canadian player.
“I’ve got to play my best to win. You can’t go around this Tour playing your B or C game and come out a victor. The competition is so good, any guy can win any week. I’ve got to keep grinding, and do my best.”
Already, he’s eyeing the upcoming PGA Tour qualifying school, but recognizes that making the grade won’t be easy. Of the six Canadians currently on the big Tour, not one qualified for the FedExCup playoffs. Hadwin knows the elements of his game that must be razor sharp to make it in golf’s big leagues.
