Golf Vacations: What You Need To Know
Vacation time is here! Pack up your clothes. Pack up your shoes. Pack up your toothbrush, toothpaste, and some sunscreen. And, of course, don’t forget to pack the most important thing of all: your golf bag. Welcome to Golf Vacation 101. Let’s take a look at some things to consider when planning the golf vacation of your dreams.
Well, we may as well get the bad stuff taken out of the way first and confront question number one:
How much vacation money do you have saved?
I know, I know… you probably don’t have a fortune saved up for your golf vacation. After all, you just finished paying for a new Hybrid club and then there were those Christmas presents you had to buy a few months ago…
But whatever the case – no matter how much money you do or don’t have – you can find a golf vacation that’s just right for you. If you do happen to have a lot to spend to get away, you would be wise to go where the warm weather beckons golfers from all across the world. How about the southern United States? California? The Virgin Islands? Hawaii? Why, you could see a volcano or three while you tee up on the green.
But if you don’t have the funds available for extravagant vacations such as these, (remember, not only do you have to pay golf fees, but you must also cover hotel stay, transportation, food, and other activities) you could take a much cheaper vacation. If you live on the East Coast of the United States, you could drive yourself and a few friends to a golf club a few hours south to play for a few days. Granted, it may not be a resort-like atmosphere, but if you are there strictly for the golf, that shouldn’t even matter!
Are you bringing non-golfers on your trip?
If you are bringing along girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, or family members who don’t want to golf but who do want to get away with you, you should try to chose a golf place that is close to other attractions such as shopping malls, amusement parks, movie theatres, or beaches. Many golf resorts even offer packages that allow you and your guests to ‘stay and play’. Most of these resorts offer packages to save you money on room and greens fees. Look at all of the ins and outs and read between the fine lines of the packages you are looking into before making a final decision about which place to choose. This way, you won’t be the only one who gets to have fun on the vacation. And, while your family stays entertained, this makes more and more time for you to tee up!
Is your potential vacation course challenging enough for you?
If you are concerned about having an overly difficult or not-difficult-enough course to play on while you vacation, realize that most golf resorts offer a variety of courses available to choose from. After all, these places realize that all golfers have different abilities, likes, and dislikes. If you are very concerned though, it never hurts to speak with people from the resort by phone, or even talk to past guests that you know stayed in the same place. A little opinion can go a far way!
Finally, make sure that you enjoy your vacation and your golf. Typically vacation time comes around only once a year for most people. So make the most of your fun in the sun!
Challenge:
Perhaps the most basic consideration when choosing destinations and courses is the difficulty level of the courses you’re considering. Generally speaking, many fine golf destinations have a variety of courses available, which will allow golfers of various abilities to enjoy themselves, so this factor may impact more which courses you choose rather than which destination you decide upon.
Weather, Seasons, and Related Concerns:
On the flip side, if you or your group eats, sleeps and plays golf while traveling, assuming the handicap and letter of introduction requirements do not pose a problem, traveling to the U.K. during the summer months can be a golfer’s dream, since the sun in that part of the world does not set until as late as 10 or 11 p.m. and rises again by 4 or 5 a.m. This allows for 36 holes a day, with daylight to spare for other activities.
Off Season?
Many golf travelers like to save money by traveling off-season. This is a great idea, provided they’ve thought about the drawbacks as they pertain to them. Some golfers don’t mind playing in the rain, heat, or the wind, and their or their companions’ age or health is not a factor. For example, prices are down sharply in Florida and Palm Springs during the summer months – for those who can stand the heat (and in the case of Florida, the humidity).
Other Activities:
What else is there besides golf? And does it matter for your purposes? As mentioned above, weather can cause you to reconsider your plans to play, and even the hardiest players are occasionally faced with course closings due to weather. If this happens, you may be stuck with very little to do. Or, you may be traveling with a family, spouse, or others who do not play, in which case you will need to be sure there’s plenty for everyone to do.
How Many Courses Do You Need?
Another factor worth considering is the amount of time you have to play, and how many courses you have the time and desire to play. For a weekend getaway, you might consider a destination with only one or a few courses – a destination that otherwise would prove unsuitable for a weeklong excursion. Bald Head Island, North Carolina, for example, is a wonderful private island destination where the only mode of transportation is golf carts. Are you bringing non-golfers on your trip?
If you are bringing along girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, or family members who don’t want to golf but who do want to get away with you, you should try to chose a golf place that is close to other attractions such as shopping malls, amusement parks, movie theatres, or beaches. Many golf resorts even offer packages that allow you and your guests to ‘stay and play’. Most of these resorts offer packages to save you money on room and greens fees. Look at all of the ins and outs and read between the fine lines of the packages you are looking into before making a final decision about which place to choose. This way, you won’t be the only one who gets to have fun on the vacation. And, while your family stays entertained, this makes more and more time for you to tee up!
Is your potential vacation course challenging enough for you?
If you are concerned about having an overly difficult or not-difficult-enough course to play on while you vacation, realize that most golf resorts offer a variety of courses available to choose from. Confidence is Tiger problem
Tiger Woods has lost confidence in his swing and will not be able to dominate the game of golf again until he gets it back.
That's the view of Padraig Harrington who played the first two rounds of last week's 92nd PGA Championship with the beleaguered 14-time major winner.
Harrington, himself a three-time major winner currently fighting to regain his own lost confidence and to extract himself from a rut that has seen him go without a victory in the three years that have elapsed since his second Open Championship triumph in 2008, says of Woods in a report published on Tuesday by The Irish Golf Desk: "He (Tiger) is still obviously a little bit in a transition with his left knee.
"Certainly early on, he wasn't that confident with it. I saw a player who hit plenty of good golf shots. He certainly didn't get any breaks whatsoever and got a lot of bad breaks.
"That usually happens to a player who is a little bit low on confidence.
"There is no doubt that he looks a little bit low on his game at the moment. If he were anybody else, his Cleveland CG16 Black Pearl 3-PW Iron Set with Steel Shaftswould probably win tournaments and he would be so happy with it.
"But he obviously doesn't love his own golf game at the moment and you have to have confidence in what you are doing."

British duo in front at Czech Open
A hard-charging O'Hara shot a superb seven-under-par 65 to rocket up up the leaderboard and finish on 10 under 206 alongside Fisher, who reached that total with a well-played 68.
The duo have a two-shot lead over second-round leader Mikael Lundberg, taking advantage of a rare European Tour opportunity after losing his card last year and spending most of his time on the Challenge Tour, who shot an even-par 72.
Lundberg is joined by Englishman Gary Boyd, who carded a two-under 70 , and India's Gaganjeet Bhullar, whose eight-under-par 64 was the low round of the day.
Irishman Damien McGrane (72), Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara (73) andEngland's David Drysdale lie a further two shots back on six under, four off the lead.
Co-leader Fisher has found some much needed form this week, after missing 20 out of his first 21 cuts this season.
The highlight of his round came at the par-four 11th, where he holed his approach shot for an unlikely eagle. He added four birdies and two bogeys to that around the course.
"I'm really enjoying my TaylorMade R11 Irons at the moment, and I've got a great caddie on the bag," Fisher told europeantour.com.
"I had a lot of fun out there - it's where you want to be, not struggling to make the cut. It's been a while since I've led a tournament, but I'm holding it together pretty well at the moment.
"I'm looking forward to it tomorrow. I've always held my own whenever I've been in contention in the past. Obviously I haven't won before, but I've given myself a good chance tomorrow, and that's all I can ask for. MyTaylorMade R11 Irons's good enough, and I just want to have fun.
"There are times this season when I haven't enjoyed being out there, so I'm going to make the most of it now. I've just got to stay in the present. What will be, will be."

He produced a bogey-free round that features seven birdies, including four in his opening seven holes.
"I started playing TaylorMade R11 Irons really well, then went through a funny patch where I wasn't striking the ball well," he said. "But I've been striking it very well for the past two or three months, just haven't been making any putts.
"I've been making my fair share this week, and my scores have reflected that. My driving and greens in regulation stats have been pretty good, so if I could just become even an average putter, I probably wouldn't be struggling like I have done. I've been guilty of changing my putter every other week in the past, but I've found one I like and I'm in a good groove on the greens now, so I think I'm just going to stick with it."
Bhullar, meanwhile, also achieved a eagle on a par-four, his coming courtesy of an 80-yard wedge shot at the 13th.
He was full praise for the conditions.
"I've played The Open at Turnberry in 2009 and the Omega European Masters for the past two years, and the weather hasn't been great. But this week it's been perfect, and it feels like heaven on earth. I'm loving TaylorMade R11 Irons," he said.
Gary Boyd, only two shots off the lead, was pleased to still be in contention after pulling things back on the back nine following a disappointing first nine holes.
"I was probably on my way out of the tournament after shooting two over on the front nine, especially with the guys behind me making birdies," he said. "But I holed a nice putt on the tenth, and that kind of kick-started my recovery.
"I had a good finish again today with birdies at three of the last five holes, and I also lipped out on 17. The three-putt on 16 didn't help, but it was nice to roll one in on the last."

New goals for Fisher after Czech win
Oliver Fisher, a first-time European Tour winner at the Czech Open on Sunday, has reset his sights on a top 60 place in The Race toDubai.
Fisher, who wasGreat BritainandIreland's youngest-ever Walker Cup representative in 2005 before he turned professional, won the Czech Open after his 174th Tour start and has lifted his place on the Race To Dubai standings from 224th to 75th.
He has also lifted his Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons and daring do after a long struggle to rediscover the form that took him to 51st place on the Order of Merit list in 2008 and believes he can now realistically set a new goal of making it into the Race To Dubai final.
Before winning the Czeck Open he seemed to be going nowehere but backwards and was feeling "pretty frustrated" after making just one cut in 21 tournaments between December 2010 and July of this year.
But the 22-year-old had never stopped working at his Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons and began to turn things arounf when he made the cut at the Nordea Masters and the Irish Open last month.
Then came his maiden professional win at the Prosper Golf Resort's Old Course in Celadn?in the Czech Republic last Sunday and upping his ante like this has got him excited again and thinking bigger
"I hadn't really given the Dubai World Championship a second thought until now, because my form so far this season hadn't been the best, to say the very least.
"But now that I've got my first win under my belt, which was my target at the start of the year, I've got to set myself new goals," Fisher told the ieuropeantour.com
"I've got a realistic chance of finishing in the top 60 of The Race to Dubainow, so that's definitely on my radar. It's a massive event, so I'd love to play Nike Victory Red TW Forged Blade Irons in it for the first time."

Edoardo did win, and Montgomerie did pick him, choosing the 30-year-old Italian over even the likes of Paul Casey and Justin Rose.
It all worked out for the European team in the end, as they won a nail-biter at Celtic Manor, and even though neither of the Molinaris won TaylorMade R11 Irons, their partnership grabbed a half point in the fourballs and Edoardo himself managed a half point on the final day singles against Rickie Fowler - points that were as valuable as any others scored.
Edoardo was riding pretty high at that stage, climbing as high as 15th in the rankings. A more sedate 2011 has since seen him drop back down to 50th and he'll be eager to start his comeback this week.
"Defending my title at Gleneagles is a big priority - it's a great tournament and I really like the course, which will be a great venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup," he said.
"I like playing TaylorMade R11 Irons inScotland and I'm sure the Scottish crowds will be unbelievable to me again, just like they were last year. They are the most knowledgeable crowd that we play in front of."
His brother Francesco led the event going into the final round last year, but finished third after a disappointing 75. He's back again as well to try and rectify that wrong.

"Pretty much my whole day was the last couple holes," he added. "Nothing was happening for me on the front but I was being careful."
Perry equalled Calcavecchia's eagle at 18, holing out from a bunker and making up for the double-bogey he suffered at the 14th when he overcooked his wedge approach shot and hit it over the back of the green.
"It's a 30-foot face bunker, green sloping away from you and it takes two hops and (like) Michael Jordan, just dunks."
Cochran, last month's Senior British Open champion when he triumphed by two strokes over Calcavecchia, started the day tied for the lead with Sluman, and looked set to retain sole possession of the lead before a bogey at 17 dropped him back to seven under.
"I have to play PING G20 Irons better tomorrow," Cochran said. "There's a couple guys out there who are used to winning that haven't won on the Champions Tour that are really going to go after it. If I don't go after it, I'm going to be left behind."
